Colt wildfire in Seeley Lake, summer 2023

Spring is here, and that means preparing ourselves for wildfire season here in Montana. Residents in the Seeley Lake area are invited to celebrate National Wildfire Preparedness Day on Saturday, May 2, at the Seeley Lake Community Foundation, 3150 Hwy. 83 N. in Seeley Lake.

Residents can stop by anytime from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and learn from wildfire professionals and local agencies on how to prepare themselves and their homes, plus learn about opportunities for grant funding to take care of fuels on your property. Other topics will include how to create clean air spaces in homes, evacuation planning, fuel mitigation, forest management and how to create a defensible space around a home.

Each organization will have a table to visit with different publications and can answer questions about being ready for wildfires. Participating organizations include the Missoula County Wildfire Mitigation Program, the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, the .U.S Forest Service, Wild Montana, the Red Cross of Montana and Idaho, Clearwater Resource Council, Seeley Lake Rural Fire District and the Missoula Electric Coop. Participants can also enjoy yard games, pizza and snacks. Kiddos can explore a wildland fire engine, get toys and even meet Smokey Bear!

"Wildfire season is around the corner, which can make a lot of people nervous," said Olivia Anderson, wildfire mitigation specialist at Missoula County. "By learning about and taking actionable steps, residents and homeowners can be prepared. There are dozens of resources available to Missoula County residents and many agencies who are ready to help you."

The Missoula County Wildfire Mitigation Program helps county residents with free wildfire risk assessments as well as community-wide wildfire planning. More information about the program is available online.
