Missoula County Removes Stage II Fire Restrictions

Posted on August 19, 2026

High Fire Danger Sign

Due to increased precipitation, shorter days and projected weather patterns, fire officials in Missoula County have lowered fire danger from very high to HIGH, effective Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Stage II fire restrictions were lifted on state and private land within Missoula County on Aug. 19. Lolo National Forest remains in Stage II restrictions. Always check local fire restrictions at MTFireinfo.org to make sure you are following the correct restrictions.

Despite recent rainfall and cooler temperatures, fires can still start easily in open, dry grasslands and can burn in heavy timber and dead and downed trees, especially on windy days. Grasses are more likely to dry out even after one hour of heat or low humidity.

Residents and visitors are asked to always use caution when using fire. If allowed, keep campfires small and completely extinguish them before leaving camp. Please do your part in preventing wildfires so fire resources can continue suppression efforts on current fires. Outdoor burning remains closed for the season.
